Theoretical background and therapeutic practices

The NEST programme combines ideas and concepts from a number of different approaches to therapy, the integration of these being facilitated by the use of a social constructionist epistemological frame. NEST draws on the following fields and streams of thought:

• psychoanalysis
• the Eriksonian model of psycho-social development
• attachment theory
• existential analysis
• cognitive restructuring
• behaviour modification
• psychodrama
• transactional analysis
• research done on the long term effects of child abuse and neglect, the effects of pregnancy losses, the psychology of survival and resilience.

The therapeutic practices employed by NEST therapists include the following:

•  between-session tasks and personal reflections
• role-playing
• visualization
• letter-writing
• working with dreams
• utilizing group dynamics.
